1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna Review

PROS : This antenna gives you a 10-foot coax cable to work with.
CONS : The signal pickup range falls a tad short.
VERDICT : The 1Byone series of antennas have nice designs, but most series offered by this company seem to fall a little short of the best HDTV antennas.

The 1Byone Paper Thin Digital Indoor TV antenna, with its paper-thin design, can fit almost anywhere by your TV. This antenna comes with a 10-foot flexible coax cable as well. This is useful because it gives you enough room to move the antenna around to find the spot with the strongest TV signal. The suction cups included with this antenna don’t work incredibly well, so you may need to fasten it to a wall or window near your TV. While black may go with nearly everything, it is the only color choice, whereas some of the top-ranked HDTV antennas have a couple different color options.

1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna Product Review

Most antennas are omnidirectional, which allows you to find a signal no matter where the antenna is pointed. This antenna is supposed to be multi-directional, but it gets a better signal when pointed at the broadcast signals. To be fair, most antennas work better when pointed directly at the signals, though the best indoor antennas work well no matter where you point them. This paper-thin antenna also comes with an amplifier, but the signal does not work as well in the 50-mile radius as it should. The Tube series, another indoor antenna, does not have a long range either, and the amplified 1Byone digital outdoor antenna does not have as long of a pickup range as the top HDTV antennas.
Installation is fairly easy – you just have to plug it in and run a channel scan. For help, you can contact 1Byone through a non-toll free number or by email. Customer service is not 24/7, but the company will get back to you within 24 hours of your inquiry. 1Byone offers a fairly standard one-year warranty on its antennas as well.

  • IMPROVING YOUR EXPERIENCE - As with any antenna, you may find many variables contribute to your antenna's performance. If your antenna is not working as expected, try one of the following: 1.) Check the antenna is correctly connected to your HDTV or 3rd party HD receiver. 2.) Set the mode to Antenna or Air in the TV's setup menu and re-scan for channels. 3.) Antenna signal strength can vary depending on distance from the tower, terrain, and weather. If needed, reposition the antenna in a different location, such as higher on a wall or closer to a window, and face it in the direction of the broadcast tower. Always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. 4.) This is an amplified antenna; If a signal cannot be received with the external amplifier, remove the amplifier and try again. In some instances, the amplifier may cause self-oscillation, which may interfere with the signal.
1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna Review Summary

The 1Byone Paper Thin Digital Indoor antenna is an effective antenna, but it does have a couple of shortcomings. Even though it is wall-powered with an amplifier, the antenna does not get as strong of a signal as some of the best HDTV antennas that we’ve seen. The antenna has a paper-thin design and a 10-foot cable, which are good qualities. Even though this is a multi-directional antenna, it’s optimized range and signal reception works better when it is pointed in the direction of the broadcast signal.

Some Customers Review About 1byone Amplified HDTV Antenna

Careful before You adhere it! - UPDATE BELOW
on July 20, 2016

I finally got this 1Byone 13" amplified antenna after a shipping mistake and couldn't wait to try it out. I was currently using a Radio Shack amplified antenna but had a lot of problems with getting a clear picture most of the time. I live about 25 miles from Chicago and our Chicago CBS station is one of the last 3 to upgrade in the country so reception was non existent for my home.
I followed the instructions, which are clear to follow and had this 1Byone installed in no time. I put it in a corner window pointing to Chicago and ran the channel search, what a SURPRISE - 52 channels, even CBS as clear as could be!

With the old antenna I was able to get only about 38 channels so what more can I say other than I am impressed with the 1Byone amplified antenna!

Now for the bad: when I first did the search and everything was great, I had the antenna just leaning on the window supported by the double hung bar. After being so excited about all the channels and how clear they where I affixed the 1Byone antenna to the window with the double sided tape pads they include (3) within inches of the scan. Bad part starts now - after sticking it to the window my reception is not that great anymore. Most problems are with the UHF stations that should be the strongest signals, which are all except CBS which still always comes in clear - go figure. I have tried to get the antenna off the window every possible way without breaking it but the tape won't budge.

So best advice I can give is YES this antenna works GREAT, just be careful before you make it a permanent placement.

UPDATE: So after owning this antenna for about 9 months it has given out. I now can no longer get all the channels I could in the beginning and those I can still get, about 12, are always breaking up and impossible to watch. The amplifier still shows a red light on, which means it is suppose to be working but doesn't seem to be any longer.
Now comes the GREAT part! I contacted 1byone to let them know that the antenna was no longer working. They say this has a 1 year warranty so I wanted to see if they would stand behind it. They had me try 2 different methods to see if it would work but it didn't help. After no luck getting it working 1byone has sent me a brand new antenna no charge to replace the defective one! I noticed that it is now somewhat different at the amplifier so maybe this will make a difference. In any case, 1ByOne stands by their products and I would recommend them to anyone I know.

Great Reception
on Mar 12, 2016

After getting fed up paying exorbitant amounts for cable TV, that no one really watches I pushed to make the switch to cutting the cord. (A note for those looking to cut cable, the cost savings really comes from not having to rent all the 'boxes' for $10-12 a month.) I previously tried out a similar Paper Thin HDTV antenna and had less than satisfactory results. The difference in why this one gets five stars...its amplified.

For anyone looking into switching I cannot recommend enough, get the amplified version. I'm still in my testing phase, so right now my antenna lives resting in my window, where it catches all the major networks I wanted. Depending on your TV placement you could have to place this unit without a direct view to the outside, but even when I tried that most stations still came in clearly. My long term plan for this is actually to mount it in the attic and split the signal among several TV's. I tested this briefly and event with signal reduction of using a splitter, I had four TV's running at once with no problems.

Features:

1. Approximately 13.5" x 10" x 1/2"
2. 10' flexible coax cable
3. 2 prong power cord plugs in close to where you connect the coax cable to your TV
4. Powered antenna pulls in all the major networks

Worked for me
on April 10, 2016

No one watches TV in my house so I started wondering why am I paying so much for crappy non HD cable so after reading reviews I ordered it. Package arrived I took it out of box taped it to window near my TV i wanted to use it on, I then hooked it up to my TV set my TV too Antenna and did a channel search I am not sure how long channel search took but when I came back it had found 12 HD digital channels. I started to flip through channels I got all local channels in plus some odd stations I had no idea you could get one of them was a old movie channel. For me all channels but one had crisp clear HD quality only one that didn't was a local weather channel/positive music station. I will be buying another soon for my second TV and canceling my cable saving me a $100 a month.
